Ice and snow activities, desert hot springs draw holiday crowds to Aksu, Xinjiang
During the recent nine-day Spring Festival, the city of Aksu in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region reported a significant uptick in its cultural and tourism market. Officials attribute the growth to targeted initiatives focusing on ice and snow tourism, cultural activities, and service guarantees under the theme "Celebrating the New Year with Joy".
From Feb 15 to 23, the city welcomed nearly 370,000 domestic tourists, a year-on-year increase of more than 12 percent. Tourism expenditure reached 198 million yuan ($28.76 million), a rise of 13.46 percent compared to the previous year.
Ice and snow tourism proved to be a major draw, with 13,000 visitors participating in related activities and generating roughly 1.3 million yuan. The Moon Desert Hot Spring Resort was a particular highlight, attracting visitors with precisely controlled water temperatures. The resort also introduced innovative wellness programs, including sand therapy and salt therapy, and provided complimentary outdoor picnic areas.
Cultural celebrations were widespread, with more than 150 village galas, known locally as Cunwan, attracting more than 30,000 participants. In Dunmaili village, Ayikule town, locally produced performances such as dragon and lion dance parades became vibrant platforms for communication and integration among people of all ethnic groups.
To encourage tourism and spending, 10 A-level scenic spots in the city implemented a free admission policy during the holiday. Additional discounts, including reduced ticket prices and recharge bonuses, were offered for popular destinations like the Moon Lake Hot Spring Resort and Wetland Park Skating Rink. Several star-rated hotels also provided discounts on accommodations and New Year's Eve dinners.
