The Ballad of Dangtu, refers to the folk songs of east Anhui Province along theYangtze River. As early as the Six Dynasties (220-589 AD), there have been written records of the ballad, which were later represented by 20 or so typical poems written by a local poet.

The Ballad of Dangtu is especially known for its soft and gentle melody. There are several different types of the ballad, such as madrigal, boating songs, and others lantern and door songs。

After the establishment of the PRC in 1949, people of Dangtu also started to write the ballad themselves, which brought about the most popular era for the Ballad of Dangtu in the late 1950s. There has been more than 40 versions of the Ballad of Dangtu recorded.
