John Bull這個(gè)名字是怎么來(lái)的呢？英國(guó)人和狗的關(guān)系非常密切，特別是斗牛犬 (bulldog)，所以，十八世紀(jì)初，作家兼御醫(yī)Dr. Arbuthnot寫了一本《約翰牛傳》(The History of John Bull)，主張英、法和平相處，書中主角的名字就叫作John Bull，作者用他來(lái)代表英國(guó)。從此以后，John Bull成了英國(guó)和典型英國(guó)人的代名詞。
