Outlook for China-US relations remain bright: Chinese FM
The way China and the United States interact could shape the global trajectory, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference, adding that China approaches the relationship with responsibility to "history, our people, and the world".
Wang made the remarks during the conference's "China Session", where he took questions from the audience.
Citing President Xi Jinping's reflections on decades of China-US engagement, Wang emphasized the need for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, achieved through dialogue and negotiation. "We will continue on this path because it serves the interests of both peoples and the international community. Whether it succeeds depends on the US approach," he added.
Wang noted that US President Donald Trump has shown respect for President Xi and the Chinese people. He said president Trump has clearly indicated that the two countries can work together to address major global challenges and that the bilateral relationship can be improved. However, Wang said some in the US continue to seek to contain China and attack or slander the country.
Wang outlined two possible paths for China-US relations: one, the US recognizes China objectively and rationally, pursues a constructive and pragmatic policy, and expands shared interests — leading to cooperation, which he said would be a major benefit to both countries and the world. The other path involves decoupling, forming anti-China blocs, and encouraging "Taiwan independence", which could lead to confrontation.
"Of course, we hope for the first path, but we are prepared for all risks," Wang said. "History moves forward through twists and turns," he said, expressing confidence that the outlook for China-US relations is bright, adding "Mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation will ultimately prevail because it is the only correct choice."
