Man repairs roads as volunteer for 55 years
In the past 55 years, Sheng Naichun has never stopped doing volunteer repair work on roads around the village where he lives.
Sheng, 80, a villager in Dazhangjia village in Huanan county, Heilongjiang province, began the work in the autumn of 1963 when he found that vehicles that transported grains were greatly affected by terrible road conditions.
"I felt really sorry when I saw grains falling down from the vehicles because of bumps," he said. "Then I decided to do something to change it."
Where there is any damage on the road, he will get there immediately and repair it with a wheelbarrow, a shovel and a pickax.
In order to avoid the traffic rush hour, he usually starts his work at about 3 am, sometimes walking more than 10 kilometers a day.
In the past decades, he has walked more than 200,000 kilometers on village roads and transported more than 40,000 cubic meters of road materials.
Furthermore, he also cleans up snow on the roads in the winter and mud in the culverts during rainy days.
"It is not very difficult for me to do the work and I will continue as I believe I am still strong enough," he said.
